Canadian Tire disputes Attabotics’ claims over major warehouse fire

Calgary-based robotics firm Attabotics sues Canadian Tire alleging damages over warehouse fire.

Canadian Tire spokeswoman Stephanie Nadalin says the company is aware of the statement of claim filed by Attabotics. She says the company disagrees with the allegations but will not comment further as the matter is before the courts.

Attabotics is suing Canadian Tire Corp. Ltd. for damages, claiming a fire at the retail chain’s Toronto-area distribution center was caused by “wrongful conduct.”

A major warehouse fire broke out at Canadian Tire’s Brampton, Ont., distribution center on March 15.

Attabotics had been working with Canadian Tire as part of a project funded by Scale AI, Canada’s artificial intelligence, supply chain cluster. Attabotics received $7 million to reduce Canadian Tire’s warehouse needs by 85 percent and labor costs by 75 percent.

The fire cost Canadian Tire $87.7 million. The costs are related to lost inventory, building damage, cleanup, and repairs and delay in shipments, and supply chain inefficiencies because of the temporary suspension of operations at the facility.

The Calgary-based robotics company, which specializes in inventory storage and supply chain systems, alleges the warehouse fire also occurred as a result of willful misconduct, negligence, and recklessness.

In a statement of claim, Attabotics alleges that the company is liable for damages it has suffered, including loss of property, reputation, and market share.

Robotics firm Attabotics has filed a statement of claim against iconic retailer Canadian Tire over a large fire at Canadian Tire’s distribution center in Brampton, Ontario.

The Attabotics Claim states that Attabotics was in no way responsible for the Warehouse Fire that took place at the Brampton facility. “The Warehouse Fire occurred as a direct result of the wrongful conduct, statutory breaches, breaches of contract, gross negligence, willful misconduct, negligence, and recklessness of Canadian Tire.”

Furthermore, the statement alleges,

“The Warehouse Fire was caused or contributed by the employees, contractors, subcontractors, consultants, or other personnel controlled or directed by Canadian Tire and for which Canadian Tire is vicariously liable.

Attabotics’ claim states that as a result of the Defendant’s alleged evasiveness and obstruction, Attabotics has suffered damages for which Canadian Tire is liable. Such damages are alleged to include, damages for loss of reputation, business opportunities, goodwill, market share, and loss of profit.
