Aldi ditches 30-minute grocery delivery service in the UK

Aldi confirmed its has ended its relationship with Deliveroo as shopping habits return to normal post-lockdown

The discount supermarket has confirmed it has ended its relationship with Deliveroo, which it used to get food to doorsteps within 30 minutes in some areas.

Aldi shoppers will no longer be able to get groceries delivered to their door within 30 minutes, after the retailer ended its relationship with Deliveroo.

The supermarket first partnered with the courier business in May 2020 and rolled out the service to 20 stores in London, Greater Manchester, Cambridge and the Midlands. The number of participating stores had more than doubled by the end of that year and continued to expand, eventually rolling out to 129 stores nationwide.

Millions of Brits started shopping online when coronavirus hit, although supermarkets were allowed to stay open.

If you lived within 6km of one of Aldi's stores offering the service, you could have select items delivered to your home within just half an hour.

It was the only way to order Aldi groceries online as the supermarket doesn't offer online delivery for food, only some Specialbuys.

Home deliveries were never part of Aldi's long-term business model, it said and it is prioritising its click and collect service instead.

Facebook user Neil Cox wrote: "The disappearance of Aldi from Deliveroo is a harsh and cruel blow."Millions of Brits started shopping online when coronavirus hit, although supermarkets were allowed to stay open.

An Aldi spokesperson told The Sun: “We have decided to end our trial with Deliveroo to focus on our click and collect service, which remains on offer at more than 200 of our stores nationwide.” Click and collect remains available at more than 200 of Aldi's 930 UK stores.

Aldi opened its first checkout-free supermarket in the UK this week.
